The following cleanse was first widely publicized over sixty years ago.
Lemonade Colon Cleanse
This is an old standby colon cleansing recipe that has gotten a lot of attention recently since some celebrities
have use it for weight loss. For example, Beyonce mentioned she had used it during an interview on Oprah.
It is also know as the Master Cleanse.
Here’s the recipe for one serving:
8oz pure water juice ½ lemon 2 tbsp grade B maple syrup 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
The cleanse calls for drinking at least 8 cups of this juice mixture a day.
Some people advocate doing that for 7-10 days, but that seems a little long for such a nutritionally limited
cleanse. There are variations you might find that include more nutrients.
One good variation is instead of juicing the lemon, put the whole ½ lemon in ablender with the rest of the
ingredients and puree it (you might need a little extra water. There are a lot of beneficial compounds in the oil
of the peel that you’ll get this way.
There are two provisos if you do this. Use only organic lemons. Unfortunately, conventionally farmed citrus is
relatively high in residual pesticides, mainly in the peel and you don’t want to take in more toxins at the same
time you’re trying to detox. Get every last seed out on the lemon before you put it in the blender. Even one left
in will make the mixture extremely bitter.
Another variation is to add some soluble fiber to the lemonade.
Green Cleanse Soup
Greens are recommended for cleansing because of their high chlorophyll content along with many other
nutrients.
A simple green cleanse is to juice or completely liquefy in a blender 10 oz or so of spinach or another green,
parsley, lemon juice and enough water to adjust the consistency
You can also add ½ an avocado and/or a clove of garlic. The avocado adds some healthy fat as well as other
nutrients and garlic is a powerful cleanser.

Old Fashioned Colon Cleanse
Vinegar and water was a favorite pick me up of New England farmers. Here, a few additions make it a colon
cleanse.
Here’s the routine: add a tbsp bentonite clay, some psyllium powder to a 50/50 mixture of organic apple juice
and water.
Alternate a glass of this with a glass of water mixed with 1 tbsp unfiltered apple cider vinegar (Bragg’s is a
good brand) and 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup added.
Precautions
Colon cleansing can have numerous health benefits, but you do need to be a bit cautious.
Some of these cleanses, like the Lemonade Cleanse are very deficient in both calories and nutrients. I don’t
recommend staying on a cleanse like that for more than 1-3 days unless you do it under the direction of a health
care professional.
Others, such as cleanses that include numerous fruits and vegetables as juices or soups, are safer for longer
periods of time.
You may want to create your own combination. Perhaps start with a day of the Lemonade (Master) Cleanse, then a
day of the Old Fashioned Colon Cleanse, then use some of the vegetable or greens cleanses for another few days.
Additionally you could continue to take a serving of bentonite and psyllium as in the Old Fashioned Cleanse a
few times a day with the vegetables cleanse.
By the way, some people take bentonite and psyllium fairly routinely. It can be a healthy practice, but one
precaution: the bentonite clay can bind nutrients as well as toxins, so you shouldn’t take it close to the time you
take meals or supplements. Take it at least one hour before or two hours after eating.
Summary
Now you have several homemade colon cleansing diet recipes to try out, as well as some
guidelines and some precautions. Try any of them and see if you don’t feel better.
I highly recommend diet and homemade recipes for colon cleansing – I think that’s the basis of good health – but
I also think there’s a place for commercial cleanse products.
