Master Cleanse SecretsThe Master Cleanse Diet has had a lot of publicity ever since Beyonce announced on Oprah that she lost 20 pounds using it to get ready for a movie role.  Because of all this publicity, you've probably heard about the Master Cleanse Diet, and how it can cleanse and rejuvenate your body in 10 days. Of less. 

The claims sound pretty outlandish and I’ve written this master cleanse diet review to let you know what I discovered when I looked into them. I also review a book called Master Cleanse Secrets that expands on the original master cleanse and would help anyone trying the master cleanse avoid some of its pitfalls.


Master Cleanse Secrets Revealed


First, the Master Cleanse Diet is nothing new.  It was first proposed by Stanley Burroughs, who was an early propionate of natural health methods, in a little book he published in 1976 called The Master Cleanser.  

The Master Cleanse diet is also sometimes referred to as the Lemonade Diet.

In actuality, it’s more of a fast than a diet.   The main feature of the diet is drinking at least eight glasses a day of dilute lemonade sweetened with a little grade B maple syrup with a pinch of Cayenne pepper added.

The results people are getting with the Master Cleanse seem amazing, but there's something about the Master Cleanse nobody talks about much.

It has nothing to do with the results you'll get because you CAN see some really amazing things happen to your body in those 10 days you spend on the Master Cleanse.
 
Here’s what it is that most people who sing the praises of this diet don’t tell you about it.

It’s not easy.

With all the incredible benefits you get by doing the Master Cleanse people are overlooking that it's kind of hard to stay on it for 3 days much less 10 days.

Even with the excitement of waking up and seeing your belt one notch tighter then the night before, or feeling light and energized all day, staying motivated is hard.  Especially when you’re around other people who are eating normally.

You will see results on this diet and it can be a good cleansing tool, but most of us will find it tough to stay with.

My personal preference is to do periodic juice fasts with maybe a day of the lemonade to get started and then a variety of vegetable juices I juice myself for another few days.

I don’t recommend using the master cleanse for the full 10 days (or the even longer periods that some people advocate) because it is very calorie and nutrient deficient.  Some of the weight you’ll lose after the first couple of days will be muscle. 

Don’t even think about this diet at all if you’re pregnant or nursing.

However, it can be a good 'jump start' for a day or two.   and with some modifications you might benefit from going longer.

If you want to give it a try, here’s the recipe for the lemonade:

  • 8oz water
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 2 tbsp grade B maple syrup
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Drink at least eight glasses of that a day, more if you like. 

Most proponents of the diet also suggest non-caffeinated herbal tea while you’re on the diet.  I tend to drink regular green tea.

As I say try it for a couple of days and see how you respond.  You may be one of those who wants to use it longer

If you want to give it a serious effort there is another book that makes the master cleanse a little easier.  It gives some tips and advice people that have used the master cleanse successfully suggest that made it easier for them. 

It also improves on the original somewhat.

It also has some suggestions on how to add protein to it, which overcomes one of my objections.  So while I don't strongly suggest the Master Cleanse as originally described for a prolonged period, with the changes and recommended in master cleanse secrets, it becomes a much better program.

An interesting side note is that the master cleanse diet is inexpensive.  Even if you buy organic lemons (which I recommend) it won't cost much.  The money you save on food easily pays for the books a couple of times over :-)
